About the Author

Summary of Gillu

Gillu’s New Home

Gillu and the Writer

Gillu’s Favourite Food

Gillu’s Affection for the Writer

Gillu During the Writer’s Illness

Gillu in Summer

Gillu’s Freedom

Gillu’s Death

Burial Under the Sonjuhi Creeper

Transformation from Common Noun to Proper Noun

Human-Animal Relationship

Compassion Towards Living Beings

Central Idea

Answer: One morning the writer saw two crows near the flowerpots and noticed a tiny wounded squirrel lying between the wall and the flowerpot. The squirrel had probably fallen from its nest and had been attacked by the crows. The writer gently picked him up, brought him into her room, wiped the blood from his wounds and applied Penicillin ointment. She tried to feed him with milk and water. 3. Question: Describe the relationship between Gillu and the writer.

Gillu also became very attached to her. He tried to attract her attention, stayed near her while she worked and wanted to share her meals. Their relationship therefore went beyond that of a human and a pet; it was based on genuine affection and mutual care.

  4. Question: Gillu took little food during the writer’s illness. What does this suggest?

Answer: Gillu’s reduced food intake shows his deep emotional attachment to the writer. 7. Question: What does the transformation from common noun to proper noun imply?

Answer: Initially, the creature was simply a squirrel, which is a common noun. When the writer named him Gillu, he acquired a distinct individual identity.
