William Blake अंग्रेजी साहित्य के महत्वपूर्ण कवि, चित्रकार और प्रिंटमेकर थे। उनका जन्म 28 November 1757 को London में हुआ था। वे Romantic movement से पहले के ऐसे कवि माने जाते हैं जिनकी रचनाओं में कल्पना, आध्यात्मिकता, सामाजिक अन्याय और मानवीय स्वतंत्रता के विचार प्रमुखता से दिखाई देते हैं।

उनकी प्रसिद्ध कृतियों में Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell और Jerusalem आदि शामिल हैं। The Chimney Sweeper कविता Songs of Innocence से संबंधित है और इसमें बाल मजदूरी की समस्या को एक बच्चे की दृष्टि से प्रस्तुत किया गया है।

The Chimney Sweeper – Introduction

कविता का वक्ता एक छोटा बच्चा है जो chimney sweeper का काम करता है। उसकी माँ की मृत्यु उसके बहुत छोटे होने पर हो गई थी और उसके पिता ने उसे बेच दिया था। इतनी कम उम्र में उसे पढ़ने-खेलने के बजाय कठिन और खतरनाक काम करना पड़ता है। वह chimney साफ करता है और soot में सोता है।

कविता में Tom Dacre नाम का एक दूसरा बच्चा भी है। Tom नया chimney sweeper है और उसके बाल काट दिए जाते हैं। वह रोता है, लेकिन speaker उसे समझाता है कि रोने से कोई फायदा नहीं होगा। बाद में Tom एक सपना देखता है जिसमें बहुत सारे chimney sweeper बच्चे बंद coffins में दिखाई देते हैं और एक Angel आकर उन्हें मुक्त कर देता है।
